Do you find it challenging to write and demo a complete song in one sitting (40 minutes or less)? Do you wish writing songs felt more joyful? Does your initial enthusiasm eddy out in expected places, preventing you from creating and celebrating a body of work that expresses the core of who you are? Do you want clear inspirations to get you writing, a small cohort of fellow songwriters, and a devoted teacher to help you get there?
Over the four weeks, we will deepen our connection with the of the three-legged stool of songwriting: lyrics, accompaniment, and melody. Self-confidence and stury self-worth stems from clarifying how we work with each of these components. We’ll lower our expectations and observe that songs aren’t made of AMAZING chords AMAZING melodies and AMAZING lyrics. But rather, a mixture of expected and surprising choices, synergistically combined in an intuitive, resonant fashion. We’ll follow our muses, meet our inner teacher, and do some visualizations to get our heads screwed on right.
More important than the quality — though we invariably write some amazing songs — we all show up to immerse ourselves in the process, and deepen our contact with the authentic wisdom and creativity that lives within us. Getting to Know the Teacher Within.
Is this class right for me?
This space is for students of all skill levels. You are required to play at least 3 chords on a chordal instrument (guitar, piano, beyond). Past students range from beginner songwriters (no songs written, only 3 chords on guitar), to college-educated professional musicians with songs on Spotify.
This offering is for folks who really want to be in the throes of creating: now. Students are required to create daily, 20 minutes per day for writing. You’re a good fit for the class if you’d love to be joyfully honing your craft for an hour a day, 3-6 days a week.
What outcomes do you expect?
This November portal will get you writing songs in 30 minutes, writing more complete songs than you imagine is possible. We’ll work with setting intentions for our individual practice, and lean into a sprint for the last week. Participants will likely write 5-15 songs, I’ll aim for 20 this month.
